What is PM Awas Yojana: Complete information about Prime Minister Urban and Rural Housing Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM Awas Yojana) is an important social welfare scheme launched by the Government of India, which aims to provide permanent and safe houses to all the needy families of the country. This scheme is divided into two major categories – PMAY Urban (Urban) and PMAY Gramin (Rural).

PMAY Urban scheme is designed for those who live in cities or urban areas and do not have their own permanent house. Under this scheme, the government provides interest subsidy on home loans to eligible families, so that even low income people can easily build or buy their own house.

At the same time, the aim of PMAY Gramin Yojana is to provide permanent houses to poor families living in villages. Under the rural scheme, the beneficiaries are given direct financial assistance of ₹ 1.20 lakh to ₹ 1.30 lakh by the government, so that they can build their houses.

The main objective of this scheme is to realize the dream of “Housing for All”. The government wants every Indian citizen to have a respectable and safe home to live in.
If you do not have a permanent house yet and you fulfill the eligibility conditions of this scheme, then Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2025 can prove to be a golden opportunity for you to get a house.

Benefits of PMAY-Gramin (Gramin Scheme)

Financial assistance up to ₹1.20 lakh is provided by the government to eligible beneficiaries living in rural areas. Whereas, if the beneficiaries belong to hilly, border or north-eastern states, they receive an amount of up to ₹ 1.30 lakh.

This assistance is transferred directly to the bank account of the beneficiary, thereby maintaining transparency. Apart from this, 90 to 95 days wages are also paid under MNREGA for house construction work.
Also, under the Swachh Bharat Mission, separate financial assistance is provided for construction of toilets at home.

Benefits of PMAY-Urban (Urban Scheme)

For urban areas, the government has made a provision to provide assistance up to ₹ 2.5 lakh for constructing a permanent house under PMAY-Urban 2.0.
This amount is sent to the bank account of the beneficiary in installments, so that the house construction process can be completed in a phased manner.

In addition, each beneficiary is also given additional assistance of ₹12,000 to construct a toilet in his/her home.

Additional facilities for all beneficiaries

  • All houses are provided with basic amenities like kitchen, electricity connection, toilet and clean drinking water.
  • With the aim of empowering women, the ownership of the house is registered in the name of the female member or in joint name.
  • Environment friendly techniques are adopted in the construction of houses, so that the scheme also encourages sustainable and green development.
